june bird

Early June is a separate little gift from the rest of June.
Early June is promise and closure all at once.
It doesn't know if it's a bookend or the beginning of a book.
And it doesn't much care.

Early June secedes from the Union
-- from "the 12 colonies"--
It refuses, above all,
To be grouped with the ugly and abrasive February.
The two have nothing in common.

Early June teases and beckons,
While mid-February sits on your face in the morning,
Giving noogies and yelling tinny radio DJ voices in your ears.

Early February steals your bathrobe when you are in the shower
Leaving you wet and cold,
A snarky little harbinger of what awaits outside.

Early June is a proud little fellow
With upright feathers
And an expectant gaze.

If early June is a parakeet,
Mid February is a Loud Loon.
A Woodpecker.
Minus the "wood."

Sullivan Bistro, on Sullivan just north of Houston.  Happy hour that goes 'til 8:00!  I think it's 4 - 8, in fact.  The sweet little patio is a dream, but it is very small, so get there early.  They offer two $5 wines during happy hour, a Sauvignon Blanc and a Montepulciano, both good for the price.
(I liked the S.B. better.)
